Step 2 – Check the Load Plate on the Pallet Racking
Every storage system must be fitted with a clearly legible load plate. This plate provides direct insight into the maximum loads and the permitted use of the racking. It is not only a practical tool, but also a legal requirement under the applicable European standards.
The information on the load plate can help in determining and finding the parts needed for maintenance and repair
Is there no load plate on the racking? Then it may be advisable to have a visual inspection carried out by a recognized party and have load plates made.
Origin of the requirement
The requirement to fit a load plate comes from the standard NEN-EN 15635:2009 – "Steel static storage systems – Application and maintenance of storage equipment". This standard determines that the user of a storage system must be able to clearly see what the maximum loads are and how the racking may be used safely.
In addition, NEN-EN 15512 (structural design) refers to the calculations on which the values on the load plate are based. In the Netherlands, this requirement is supported by the Arbowet (Working Conditions Act, article 7.4a, work equipment) and NPR 5055-1 (practical guideline for inspection and maintenance).
What is on a load plate?
A correct load plate contains all the essential technical data on the configuration and permitted load of the racking. According to NEN-EN 15635, section 9.4, at least the following information must be stated:
- Name or logo of the manufacturer or supplier;
- Type or series of the racking (e.g. Mecalux, Stow, Dexion, Esnova);
- Maximum bay load (total weight per racking bay);
- Maximum beam load (weight per pair of beams);
- Maximum uniformly distributed load per pallet;
- The number of levels per bay and the nominal height of the levels;
- Any restrictions on pallet dimensions or load type (e.g. euro pallets, box pallets);
- The year of construction or installation date of the racking;
- The supplier's contact details for maintenance or questions.
Many manufacturers also add their logo, CE marking (where applicable), and pictograms for safe use. In some cases, the load per level or the anchoring configuration is also stated.
Finally, a number of load plates generally also carry a sticker from the inspection body indicating when the next inspection must be carried out.
Why load plates are important
The load plate forms the direct link between the structural calculation (according to NEN-EN 15512) and the daily use of the racking. Without this plate, it is impossible for users to know what the maximum permitted load is, which can lead to overloading, deflection or even collapse of the structure.
During inspections under NEN-EN 15635, the load plate is always checked for:
- Presence and legibility;
- Correctness of the displayed configuration (number of levels, bay width, height);
- Any differences between the plate and the actual construction of the racking.
Load plate and the 0-file
The load plate forms part of the so-called start file (0-file) that the supplier must provide upon delivery of a racking system. The plate must match the calculated configuration and should be kept together with the B.O.M. (Bill of Materials), drawings and anchoring plan.
Common mistakes
- Removing the plate when adjusting the racking configuration;
- Using old plates that do not match the current setup;
- Homemade or illegible plates without official values;
- Missing statement of bay or beam load.
Such mistakes can lead to a red or yellow code during an inspection (immediate risk or repair required) under the NEN-EN 15635 inspection guideline.
In summary
A correct load plate is a small component with great significance: it is the visible proof that the racking has been calculated, checked and is safe to use. Make sure every bay in your warehouse has a clearly legible and up-to-date plate, and check whether the plate is still correct with every change of beams, height or pallet type.
